Yoga means different things to different people. In the West, yoga has become an extremely popular form of exercise that is also known for its effective relaxation techniques. Many people first become interested in yoga because of its many physical benefits which include but are certainly not limited to flexibility, muscle toning and strength building. Others are interested in learning to wind down and fully relax, to take a little bit of time from their busy lives and use it just for themselves. Either way, those are great places to start.
Yoga is for everyone because every one is focusing on just what they need during a class. It’s non-competitive and can be as vigorous or as relaxing as you are in the mood for, so you decide from class to class just what your mind/body/spirit needs. My classes are appropriate for beginners and those who have been practicing yoga for years. Even though we are working in a group, each person is encouraged to go at their own pace, moving into deeper posture work as they are ready, and tailoring their practice to their own skill level for each posture.
Classes at Aware Yoga focus on yoga postures (asanas), as well as breath work (pranayama) and developing mindfulness/meditation techniques. In time you may become interested in learning more about the deeper practice of yoga, an ancient spiritual and wholistic lifestyle practice that has been evolving for over 5000 years. I'll be adding additional yoga educational links to this site in the future.
